“At 8 years old I had to go through chemotherapy...I should be dead.”
When a bundle of joy arrived at the Myers' household in November of 2000, his mom and dad could not have forseen the drastic route God would allow them to travel with this smooth skinned little boy...Elijah was a cute baby, maybe cuter than most babies.
Yet...
Elijah's world...his family's world...was shaken to its core when the doctors told him that he may not survive a rare disorder that had already embedded itself into his body...
At 8 years old, NO ONE should have to face the daunting horrors of having Chemo...
In 2007, while trekking through life's everyday routine, Ronda's (Elijah's mom) heart was shattered by the news that her brother's most recent health challenges, issues that were escaping the doctor's sight, had been diagnosed as AMN, short for Adrenomyeloneuropathy.
That was just the beginning of this nightmare...
Since AMN is genitic, Ronda's sons had to be tested...Cyrus was cleared...Elijah was not...
Elijah would be strapped with the childhood version of his uncle's genetic disorder...ALD...a disorder that would cause devastation to his little body and was expected to take his life.
Life for Elijah had to be put on hold...a possible death sentence at 8 years old!
Life here in Marion, Indiana, was left behind and Minnesota become home for the next 6 months.
Today, nearly 17 years later, Elijah has been given the gift of surviving this life-ending disease and is considered one of the best case studies in the world for his disease. As a recent graduate from college,
and looking forward to getting married, life is moving along on a much more normal tract than his earlier years could have predicted.
And...Faith is the foundation of all his victories...and is the driving force for his every day life... "Chemotherapy is one of the hardest things I've ever had to go through. But it has not only shaped the way I see the world, but also shaped the way I see God and my faith."
